Avery Bell grew up in Montreal, Canada, a city known for its vibrant culture and icy winters. There she was brought up learning both English and French as they were both commonly used. From a young age, she was mesmerized by the annual winter festivals, where towering ice sculptures transformed city squares into magical wonderlands. As a child, Avery watched artists carve lifelike forms from blocks of ice, captivated by how something so rigid could become so delicate and beautiful. Still too young to act on her desire to sculpt, a gift passed on from her mother, allowed her to participate in these festivals with an exceptional voice. From a young age, she would sing with choirs or community groups that would have her.
In her teenage years, Avery’s curiosity led her to a community workshop where she learned the basics of ice sculpting. Under an apprenticeship's guidance, Avery honed her skills, mastering tools like chisels, saws, and grinders while learning to work with ice's unpredictable nature. She developed an acute sense of timing to adjust to temperature shifts and prevent cracking, skills that set her apart as a promising sculptor.
Avery’s designs often began as detailed sketches, blending her artistic vision with the technical precision required for sculpting. By experimenting with smaller projects—decorations for family events or local contests—she gained confidence and experience.
Despite her growing talent, Avery faced a harsh reality: ice sculpting was a niche, dying art, and steady work was hard to find. Determined not to let her passion fade, she accepted a position at Spellbound Theme Park, a place known for its immersive, fantastical experiences. Moving away from Montreal was bittersweet, but the opportunity allowed her to bring her designs to life in a setting where they could be appreciated by thousands.
At Spellbound, Avery creates enchanting ice installations for themed events and seasonal attractions. From shimmering castles to whimsical creatures, her sculptures transport visitors into magical realms. Though her career isn’t without challenges, Avery thrives on the fleeting beauty of her medium, finding joy in the knowledge that her art, like ice itself, is temporary yet unforgettable.
